First Contact: The Source of Customer Loyalty

by: Leanne Hoagland-Smith

With customers being smarter, more cost conscious, more product knowledgeable and more demanding, improving customer service has become a major focus within many businesses. In Customer Satisfaction is Worthless; Customer Loyalty is Priceless, author Jeffrey Gitomer contends the real solution is shifting the paradigm away from customer service to customer loyalty. This may be the first step, but the next step is to shift the focus away from loyal customers to loyal employees.

By recognizing the significance that the ?first contact? a customer has is with the employees. The foundation for a loyal relationship begins with the employee. In retail and many service businesses, employees experience a short training session usually 16 hours or less. The time is spent viewing required legal videotapes, completing paperwork and learning the basic company policies including from answering the telephone to using the cash register. Yet, very few businesses actively develop those employees who have first contact with the customer. This results in employees who lack the real skills that are needed to develop those long-term relationships and contributes to the high turnover rate experienced by many retailers.

Imagine developing employees who can answer the following questions consistently and then take the appropriate action:

What do my customers really want or need?

How can I meet their needs?

To create such positive self-aware employees begins with creating good feelings about the individual employees. Techniques such as creative visualization or positive affirmations can enhance the employees? behavior. Creative visualization uses the imagination to visualize and achieve success.

Recent research conducted by the Helsinki School of Business reveals that only 5% of all communication is received as it was intended. In simpler terms, five out our every 100 words are actually received by the customer as the employee intended. Given the brief dialogue between customers and employees, this research suggests that the source for many dissatisfied customers begins with this first contact. How many orientation sessions actually discuss effective communication skills?

Now imagine developing:

Employees who are proactive in their communications with customers

Employees who understand the four fundamental principles of successful interpersonal communication

Employees who go the extra mile for customers

Possibly by shifting paradigms, businesses can begin to cultivate loyal customers through loyal employees who are self-aware and actively demonstrating successful attitudes, skills and knowledge on a daily basis. Your business begins and may potentially end with that ?First Contact.? The question now is ?What are you going to ensure that each first contact turns into a second, a third??

About The Author

Leanne Hoagland-Smith is President of ADVANCED SYSTEMS, The Process Specialist, located outside of Chicago, IL.
How To Get Your Contact Details Across: When The Organisers Won?t Let You

by: Sean D'Souza

Have you ever spoken at an event and they won?t allow you to give your details? Have you gone on the radio and they forget to announce where you can be contacted?

If your contact details are left out or if you?re prevented from giving information, you?ll need to play the game a little smarter.

Understand that most reporters/radio announcers/organisers are quite accomodating. They understand that you?re giving your valuable time in exchange for the publicity. But often enough you?ll run into someone who?s power drunk or whose organisation just won?t budge.

And here?s what I?ve done. And you can do too.

Refer to your product or service many times in the speech. Give an example and say how that particular example coincides with the example on Page 34 or Page 65. Or in the third CD of your 20 CD Workshop. Or the FREE Report you gave at the last event. As long as you?re making perfect sense, you will not be stopped or reprimanded. Your speech will meet the host?s guidelines, yet all the time you?re leaking out information.

By the end of the speech, you should have created enough leaks for the audience to be extremely curious. They?ll want to know about Page 34. They?ll want to know about the FREE Headline Report you gave at the last event.

As your fame grows, you may not need to do any of the above. If the organisation doesn?t allow you to give your contact details you can refuse to do the interview/speech. However when you?re starting out, you may crave the additional publicity and that?s okay.

Be sure of one thing. Don?t let your speech be random. Create leaks and watch how the audience swarms around you after the event!

About The Author

Sean D'Souza

Wouldn't you love to stumble upon a secret library of small business ideas?
Cleaning Your Computer Will Help It Last Longer And Work Better

by: Scott Dary

To clean your mouse ? The trackball can pick up dirt and dust from your desk and mouse pad. Also, the wheels that the trackball come in contact with get dirty and need to be cleaned. If you notice your mouse "doesn't work right", it may be time to clean it. First, turn your PC off. Turn your mouse over and you will see the ball sticking out of a cover. Look at the arrows on the cover and turn it in the indicated direction to open it up. Don?t worry about anything falling out. The only thing that comes out is the ball, and maybe a little dust, and you want to take that out anyway. You can clean the ball with alcohol if it needs it, but usually just wiping it off will work. A cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol works well for cleaning the wheels. When you?re done, drop the ball back in and put the cover back on. If cleaning it doesn?t help, it may be time to replace it. PC mice are usually less than $10 and are sometime free if you watch for sales in the Sunday paper.

To clean your optical mouse - If you have an optical mouse, one with a red light under it, there is no ball and you can just wipe off the lenses with a cotton swab.

To clean your keyboard - Never spray anything into your keyboard, this includes coffee. You can use a vacuum cleaner to clean dust, dirt, staples and cookie crumbs from your keyboard, but make sure your computer is off before starting, and make sure you don?t have any loose keys. Rubbing alcohol works well to clean the keys and surface of your keyboard, but use it sparingly. Using a cloth works well, as paper towels tend to leave little pieces behind. If you spill something sticky like your favorite soft drink on the keyboard, the keys will likely start to get sticky as it dries. It could be time to replace it. They too are cheap and can be free if you watch for a sale.

To clean the computer - You can use a vacuum to clean around the vents and anywhere else that looks dusty. Be careful in the back of the PC to not knock any plugs loose. It is a good idea to keep the vents clean and free of dust, pet hair or lint. How often you clean your computer depends more on the environment it's in than the manufacturer?s recommendation. I have 2 dogs that shed so I clean my computer about every 2 months. A cloth and alcohol can be used on the outside of the PC if it?s dirty but, again, turn it off first.

To clean your monitor - A vacuum can be used to remove dust from the vents. If you have fingerprints on the glass, you can use the same wipes that you would use on your glasses or use as soft cloth and warm water followed by a dry cloth. Think of your monitor glass the same way you think of glasses, if you wear them. They may have delicate coatings on them that can be scratched. Always avoid chemicals on displays.

To clean a laptop display or LCD ? These displays are plastic and can also be scratched by paper products such as tissues or paper towels or damaged by chemicals. Use a cloth made for glasses or camera lenses or a soft cloth and warm water followed by a dry cloth.

About The Author

© 2005 Dary Group, LLC

Scott Dary?s experience as a network administrator has given him valuable real-world experience fixing all kinds of computer problems.
Pay Only for the Digital Camera Features You Need

by: Gareth Lenzy

Focus on Features When Buying a Digital Camera

Being well informed about the main digital camera features before shopping means you will know which are worth the extra cost. Reading reviews and talking cameras with friends will be helpful, but here are the key points to consider.

The first thing you will notice when looking at digital cameras is the term megapixel is used often. Pixels are the colored dots that make up a digital image. The term megapixel means one million pixels. Most models are between two and five megapixels.

The more megapixels the sharper the image, generally, but the size of enlargement is the important issue. You will be okay with three megapixels for enlargements up to an 8x10, but for larger photos you'll want more. If you plan to go big, the extra expense for a five megapixel is worth it. But save your money if you will use the photos for emailing friends or to make small enlargements.

The lens, as with any camera, is a prime consideration. Cheaper digital models normally feature fixed lenses, which limits your scope considerably. Zoom lenses, with their greater flexibility to frame and bring images close, are worth the extra expense unless your use will be very basic. A 3x zoom will give you reasonable range for typical shots, but wildlife shots would benefit from a 10x. Be sure that you're getting an optical rather than a digital zoom, which merely enlarges the pixels and gives poorer image quality.

For even greater flexibility, you would need the interchangeable lenses that come with professional cameras. While you would have the potential for magnificent photos, the jump in price is huge.

Consider how you will use your camera. Some models have the capability to take both video and still pictures. A combination model is more expensive, but you won't have to purchase a separate video camera.

Size is a key factor. Will you want to carry around the camera if it is large? Or will you make better use of a compact model that fits easily into a pocket? While image quality is typically better in the larger models, the smaller cameras do very well and likely get more use.

Virtually all digital models use a memory card or stick for storing images, but usually you will need more memory than is provided with the camera so budget for buying extra. The amount of memory you need depends on how many pictures you will take. In general, look for memory that will hold between fifty and one hundred pictures. When making a photography purchase, make sure you can get replacement memory easily and inexpensively for your model.

Heavy use of batteries is typical of digital cameras, especially when the LED screen is turned on. Some major manufacturers use a proprietary battery that's expensive to replace. Most useful is a battery that's widely available and easy to recharge.

You will be given software with your purchase to download images onto your home computer. This software allows you to store pictures on your computer, email them to family or edit pictures for a variety of projects.

To correct serious problems with images, or for more professional projects, additional software will likely be required. Be sure your computer supports the software that comes with your camera.

About The Author

Gareth Lenzy contributes to the Camera site YO Camera, which offers a free newsletter at http://www.yocamera.com.

How To Contact The IRS Without Breaking Into A Sweat

by: Wayne M. Davies

We all love to criticize the IRS, don't we? It's easy to
ridicule a huge organization of government bureaucrats who
often seem to be Public Enemy #1.

Our negative attitude toward the IRS can lead to a
strong desire to just ignore it altogether. But
self-employed people who ignore the IRS do so at their
own peril.

So when it comes to providing free information about
taxes, let's not throw the baby out with the bath water.
The IRS does provide some excellent resources to help
us make the best of a potentially bad situation.

If you need tax assistance and prefer not to pay for it,
do not overlook these five ways to obtain help from the IRS:

1. The Internet
http://www.irs.gov

There's a wealth of information just for small business
owners and self-employed people at:
http://www.irs.gov/smallbiz

Here you'll find everything from how to obtain a federal
business tax ID to a free 6-session streaming video
presentation of the "IRS Small Business Workshop."
Also known as the Small Business Self-Employed Online
Classroom, you can access this directly at:
www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=97726,00.html

If you prefer to attend an IRS small business workshop in
person, check here to see what's available in your state:
www.irs.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=99202,00.html

Need tax forms and/or their instructions?
Look no further than the IRS website:
http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/index.html

Here you'll find a boatload of links to every tax form
imaginable, available as downloadable PDF files or
in fill-in format. All form instructions can also be
downloaded.
http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/lists/0,,id=97817,00.html

The IRS has many free publications that explain virtually
every major (and many minor) tax topics in great detail.
Sure, IRS "pubs" are not always written in the most
entertaining style, but, hey, remember the price.
http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/lists/0,,id=97819,00.html

2. Telephone Hotlines.

Special toll-free numbers exist for the following:

-- To order forms & pubs: 800-829-3676
(in case you'd like to receive a paper copy via snail-mail)

-- To ask business tax questions: 800-829-4933

-- To ask personal tax questions: 800-829-1040

Use common sense when phoning the IRS: to avoid long
wait times, don't call on Monday morning. And no matter
when you call, be prepared! Write out your questions
beforehand and have all relevant documentation in front
of you, as well as a favorite book or magazine to read
during the inevitable wait time. Stay calm; don't yell;
treat the IRS employee like a human being and he/she
will likely return the favor.

-- Need help with long-standing problems: 877-777-4778

-- Prerecorded messages on 140 topics: 800-829-4477

3. TaxFax Service.
You can receive most IRS forms instructions via fax
by calling 703-368-9694 from your fax machine.

4.
Contact Existing Customers To Increase Business Sales

by: Abe Cherian

One of the best ways to increase your sales and one that won't cost you a lot or take a huge amount of time is by selling more to your existing customers. This can be a lengthy process and expensive to win over a new customer. between advertising, sales calls, and approvals. With existing customers the process can be much quicker, smoother, and less costly.

Existing customers already know you and what you can do. Your challenge is to learn about additional opportunities within your company, and go after them.

If the cost of sale for an existing customer is so much lower than for a new customer, why don't small companies go after their existing customers more aggressively?

Because they have been conditioned to grow their customer list, and because they simply may not realize the potential that exists in obtaining repeat sales from existing customers.

Bringing in new customers is sometimes more exciting for sales people than expanding sales to existing customers. Don't interpret this to say that small companies shouldn't aggressively go after new customers. The purpose here is to suggest that substantial growth lies in repeat sales to existing customers.

Stay in touch with existing customers to learn their ongoing needs. Inquire into their challenges so as to discover needs they have that you can fulfill. It may be that someone in another department has a problem that one of your company's products or services can solve. It is only by being in touch with customers that you learn about such opportunities.

Try to find up selling opportunities. Not only more of the same, but larger orders and new features. A satisfied customer is a great candidate for expanded sales. The customer has respect for your capabilities and ability to deliver. The customer will listen to your pitch and likely tell you about possible obstacles.

They will probably tell you about their limited budgets or opposition from another department. They might slip you some information about the existence of a competitor. You are then in a position where you can help solve the problem. Perhaps by offering a quantity discount or throwing in some additional service that will convince others in your company that you should provide more of your products or services.

Let existing customers know when you come out with a new product or service. Regardless of whether they buy, they can provide feedback and may become buyers for the new product down the road.

Seek out leads from existing customers. They can often provide referrals to others in their companies or to individuals associated with other firms they do business with. It always helps in soliciting a prospect to be referred by someone the prospect respects. Existing customers represent a potential gold mine. Not only for the present, but for helping expand your company's future.

Copyright © 2005 Abe Cherian

You may publish this article in your ezine, newsletter on your web site as long as the byline is included and the article is included in it's entirety.
Top of the Line Digital Cameras

by: Warren Lynch

If you think that digital cameras are for snapshots only, then you obviously haven't heard about SLR (Single Lens Reflex) digital cameras. SLR is a type of camera which has one lens for composing the frame and capturing the image. SLR cameras are also known as TTL (through-the-lens) cameras.

An SLR camera displays an image through the viewfinder that is exactly the same image as the camera sees and is exactly the same image that the camera is going to record when you release the shutter.

An SLR camera provides a much more accurate image through the viewfinder than a digital camera produces on its LCD because the LCD does not faithfully reproduce the colors and light intensity that is actually entering the camera.

The top of the line SLR digital cameras rival the best film-based SLR cameras and are designed for serious hobbyists and professional photographers. Digital SLR cameras are much larger, bulkier, and heavier than traditional digital cameras.

The SLR uses a mirror that is located behind the lens as well as an optical device known as a pentaprism to channel the light that enters the camera's lens to the optical finder. When you release the shutter the mirror moves out of the way and the image is captured in the same way as any digital camera.

The better digital SLR cameras let you mount different lenses just like their film-based counterparts do. Many of your existing 35mm lens may be compatible with a digital SLR. If you have a large lens collection then you should definitely look for a digital SLR that is compatible with them.

Because the digital SLR cameras are more professional, they come with a hefty price tag. A 6-megapixel Nikon D100 runs around $2,000 and the 11-megapixel Canon 1D runs near $8,000. This is for the camera body only and does not include a lens! This is why I mentioned earlier that you should look for a digital camera that will mount your existing lens collection. Just a good quality zoom lens can run you at least $3,000 and can climb as high as $10,000 depending upon the features!

Of course, there are also starter-priced digital SLR cameras available. The Olympus E-20N, a 5.0-megapixel SLR camera, which includes a non-replaceable lens that is capable of duplicating a 35 mm to 140 mm lens, runs around $3500.

These prices are not out of line if you make your living shooting pictures. You can actually create additional revenue streams when you shoot digital pictures, instead of film-based ones, by offering image enhancement options and all sorts of digital FX options for thee prospective bride and groom's on their treasured wedding album.

If all of this sounds a bit too expensive for your blood, then you'll probably find all of the digital camera that you'll ever need way down in the $99 to $500 price range and you'll never have to worry about buying extra lenses. Digital SLR cameras aren't for everyone but, if they're for you, then there are plenty of models to look at. SOme of the best are made by Canon, Olympus and Nikon which are familiar names in the photography world.

Warren Lynch has been shooting commercial photography since 1979.
Anyone Can Clean Their Car, But What About Those Cloudy, Yellow Headlights?

by: David Maillie

It is a very common occurence. We see then every day. Its like a disease - yellow, cloudy headlight lenses. I even saw them on cars at the local carwash. It befuddled me that these people would take such great care - washing, vacuuming the interior, removing the floor mats and even hand drying their cars, but they still had those yellowed, cloudy headlights. Its not just a problem on old, very used cars. It is prevalent on 2 - 3 year old cars also. It doesn't matter if it is a Dodge, Ford, Mercedes, or a Porsche.

When questioned, most said they couldn't afford, or didn't want to pay the high prices of replacements from their local auto dealer. The average price for a pair of replacement plastic headlights at local auto dealerships was around $450 - that didn't even include installation and alignment (that would be another $60-120). Aftermarket headlights do exist, but have received mixed reviews, and the savings aren't that great, quality and fit is lagging, and then you still had to have them installed and aligned. And for what so you can do it again in another year or two?

There is another solution, there is a patented headlight cleaner and restorer kit. Its under $20, much less expensive than replacement lenses, and it works!

Plastic headlight lenses are the norm in the automotive industry now - every car has them. Some have fancy names like plexan and Lexan, but they all have the same problems. The sun, acid rain, harsh weather conditions, chemicals (brake fluid, power steering fluid, hot radiator fluids, hot water, harsh cleaners, etc...) will all cause the plastic lenses to degrade and weaken quickly. Some manufacturers have gone to including a protective film on the lenses. Regardless, they are all susceptible to this weakening and yellowing over time.

With this headlight cleaner and restorer even junk yard car lenses have been restored to brand new. These same lenses used to be discarded and now have become new profit centers for salvage yards all over. The treatment is applied to the exterior of the headlight lens where the damage is worst and it doesn't take a mechanic to do it.

It is easy to do, doesn't take very long, and the results are fantastic. So there is a very economic solution to the problem of yellow, cloudy, worn headlights. There's no excuse now to not have sparkling clean headlights. Car dealerships everywhere are using headlight cleaner and restorer on their cars and you can too.

About The Author

David Maillie is a chemist with over 12 years experience in biochemical research and clynical analysis.
Motorcycle Face and Eye Apparel ? A Hoax or Coax

by: Maricon Williams

Motorcycle face and eye apparel saves face. Every rider who has been hit by debris, bugs or insects, blaze of the sun can go into details on how they are benefited by said motorcycle apparel.

Windshields and sunglasses may not offer the best protection that we need. This is because debris, wind, bugs or insects may still pass behind a windshield. On the other hand, sunglasses or goggles with shatterproof lenses may not seal out the harsh wind or water from entering our eyes.

Face shields cover all or a portion of our face. They come in a wide range of designs and colors. Face shields must allow airflow, easy breathing and prevent fogging. The most popular face shield is the flip-up type. In connection with the non-flip types, we have bubble shield and flat shield. Bubble shield is a bit curved thus, in selecting the same, be sure that it will not distort your vision. Most frames have a rubber or cotton strap to resist tearing and stretching. Another note is to use it with a snug or securely fastened helmet to prevent it from being blown off. Aside from that, consider its durability or its impact resistance and scratch-free features. In order to guaranty the same, you have to look for the VESC-8 or V-8 standard on the upper portion of the shield. These face shields mean they are already tested for impact and penetration resistance. This way you can be assured that you are getting a state-of-the-art face and durable shield. Cleaning the face shield is pretty easy. You just need a mild solution of soap and water or a reliable plastic cleaner. Rub the solution gently on the shield and rinse. After that, your shield will be ready for a ride once again.

When it comes to eyewear, purchase only those that carry VESC-8 approval and are designed to go with a helmet. Same with the face shield, goggles must also be snug or securely fastened to the helmet so they do not blow off. Cleaning goggles is easy. You just hand wash it in the sink and let it dry.

Whether you are purchasing a face or goggles, one basis must be the clarity of the lenses. Tinted lenses reduce vision especially at nighttime. At daytime, you can use sunglasses under a face shield to avoid eye fatigue.

According to studies, face shields and eye apparel greatly reduces face and eyes injuries. Thus, it is best to wear them every time you ride.

About The Author

Maricon Williams

Please visit Motorcycle Parts, Apparel and Accessories site at http://www.motorcyclepartstrade.com for comments and inquiries regarding this article.

You Can Install Custom Tail Lights

by: Matthew C. Keegan

You have seen them on all kinds of cars: tail lights that are an obvious aftermarket modification that give even the most nondescript compact sedan an attention getting, stylish look. From Neons to Civics, and from Dakotas to Escalades, and for mostly any model in between, enthusiasts are changing their vehicle?s appearance with these cool looking mods. Exactly what are they? Some call them European tail lights while others call them Altezzas, after the name of a popular manufacturer of this type of tail light. No matter what you call them, you can install a pair in less than one hour on your vehicle.

European tail lights are an easy to install modification of your car?s tail light assembly. Available as either ?clear tail lights? or ?red tail lights? your stock tail light assemblies are replaced with a custom fitted unit developed for your particular make/model. In short what you are doing is installing crystal clear or red lenses that go over bullet-style taillight and turn signal lenses. The new lenses, paired with style rings and platings, help to accentuate the light emitting from auto tail lights and turn signals for a distinctive look that is vastly superior to the original design.

Euro tail lights are marketed in an assortment of styles and bezel colors including chrome, carbon fiber, black, etc.; some surfaces are paintable for a customized appearance. What's more, new LED or light emitting diode tail lights are catching on tool. This particular mod features the fitting of new bulbs that light quicker and illuminate brighter than standard tail light bulbs. LED bulbs are filament free and can bear up under grueling road conditions better than any stock bulb. At some point in the future all vehicles will likely come equipped with LEDs, but why wait that long?

Naturally, if you already own certain European models ? BMW and Audi are two examples -- then you probably are satisfied with your stock lights as they are what inspired the whole ?Euro tail light? craze in the first place.

Best of all, Euro tail lights are street legal and meet stringent Department of Transportation (DOT) and Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) regulations. No need to worry about being ticketed by highway patrol either unless you modify the mod illegally!

Manufacturer directions are simple to follow and assembly can be completed in as little as 30 minutes for the pair. So, before you know it you?ll be cruising down Rodeo Drive in your little deuce coupe for the whole world to see!

About The Author

Matt Keegan is an auto aficionado and contributing writer for PitStop Auto Parts: [http://www.pitstopautoparts.com], a seller of discount auto accessories including IPCW tail lights: [http://www.pitstopautoparts.com/1-ipcw-taillights.html] and APC tail lights: [http://www.pitstopautoparts.com/1-apc-tail-lights.html]
